Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to question particular calls from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
