Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
