Educating a Baby to Develop into an 'English Gentleman' – Does It Justify the Cost?

Child education concept
The organization responsible for the advertisement states that what appears like "luxury or peculiarity" is truly "deliberate investment in early education".

"A family located in the northern part of London wants to find an remarkable and skilled tutor to guide their most junior child on his initial journey to growing into an English gentleman."

Upon seeing this post, you might easily miss the phrase "first-steps" as just an expression.

However, it might be the most significant aspect of this unique employment listing, as it seeks to recruit a teacher for a 12-month-old.

Hundreds of applications have since been submitted since the unidentified family posted their search for the highly paid tutor, who needs to be "someone very special".

Over the last few weeks, the post has gained interest in the media, with many wondering why?

Innovative Idea

A tutoring expert, CEO and founder of Tutors International, which is helping the family in their quest, stated that despite early doubt, he considered the concept "visionary", and "advanced".

When he met the family, he noted they understood the atypical nature of their requirement, and how young their son is.

But, they stated that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to get a tutor, as they had waited until their elder sibling was five, and by that point "cultural influence had already taken hold".

What exactly does the family mean by "cultural leaning"?

It's "everything", he replied. "How you eat, the manner you speak".

He said the firstborn had adopted "extremely delicate, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had taken on their cultural habits. The family explained to Adam they did not want history to recur with their new baby.

The plan: To hire a English tutor, who needs to speak with RP, to shape the baby right from the beginning.

Tutoring discussion
The tutoring agency claim the advert has started a larger discussion about how parents view schooling, advantage and the role of home and culture in learning.

Osmotic Learning

"A great deal of the learning at the outset here is somewhat absorbed naturally," said Adam.

It's by means of this natural absorption that the family are aiming the child will pick up the British traits they wish to cultivate.

The consultant said the tutor must be someone who studied at "the right kinds of schools – similar types of schools as the family hope to send their son to".

"The tutor simply needs to be the appropriate candidate, they'll be doing things they aren't even aware they're doing, just naturally," he added.

Cost Not Relevant

The family told him the successful candidate should preferably also have understanding of or enthusiasm in horse riding, winter sports, the arts and music so as to inspire the child in a broad spectrum of passions.

More than that though, he said the family hoped the tutor to enrol the child on a variety of courses so the child would be "equestrian training and starting an instrument by the time they are around three years old".

In the family's view, helping their son develop into a "UK sophisticate" will result in accomplishment and open doors.

"Considering the pros and cons of that, because it's certainly a status symbol," he comments.

But, in spite of all this guidance in "UK identity", would the child adopt alleged cultural influence from the multicultural family he lives with anyway?

"Yes", replied Adam. "The family understand this may not work, but they've simply adopted the view of, 'let's give it a go and we should start as quickly as we can', because the expense of it is not relevant," he explained.

Overly Optimistic

A number of in the private teaching field who express those concerns.

An education leader, CEO and founder of a tutoring service, who supplies personal educators, commented that "the process of becoming bicultural, or actually, becoming oneself, is something that must be lived into, not manufactured."

He noted that he had relocated from China to the Britain at the period of seven, and had been raised understanding and embodying two backgrounds. He went on to learn at a prestigious UK institution.

Peter Cui portrait
Peter Cui was the first person born in the People's Republic of China to be chosen to the position of Finance Head of the Cambridge Union Society.

"The notion that a single person can serve as a representation of English culture, a person who can in some way transfer the attributes of a UK sophisticate onto a one-year-old child, appears optimistic and unrealistic," he stated.

"Based on my background, employing a quintessentially UK tutor from early childhood will not necessarily achieve the result they desire.

"I wasn't provided with that kind of mentor, and nevertheless I have been lucky enough to enjoy numerous of the situations they aspire for their son."

He continued: "The reality is, personal identity should not be imposed from the outside influences; it must be selected, and it must come from within."

Acquiring Englishness

Naturally, English culture is something Adam believes can be educated – and marketed.

"I think the situation that the world holds us in this respect is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
